Welcome to Disabled Recreations! - Currently Under Construction

We are the Hett's, Lindsay, Quinton, Terri and Darrin. We would like to share our story and our creations (listed below this introduction) with people that have disabilities or may be growing old and can't do the things they used to do.

We are sharing our story so you can get to know us and understand why we are wanting to help others enjoy life a little more. We hope we can help.

Our daughter Lindsay, who is now 18 years old, had a virus when she was 2 ½ years old that left her with extensive brain damage. She went from a happy, carefree little girl one morning, to a little girl fighting for her life, in a coma, that night. She became extremely dehydrated and the dehydration led to lack of oxygen to her brain. She now has cerebral palsy, epilepsy, cannot talk, has cortical vision impairment, scoliosis for which she has spinal rods implanted, a baclofen pump for muscle spasms, a feeding tube, and cannot use any of her limbs, except for her right arm, with some limited control.

We communicate with her by asking questions and she answers “Yes” by closing her eyes and turning her head. If she doesn't answer us and just looks at us with a frustrated, mad, or sad face, we take that as a “No”. We try to ask the same question both ways, for example, “Do you want to go fishing?” or “Do you not want to go fishing?” She understands everything we talk about, but she just can't talk back to us, so it gets a little frustrating for her sometimes.  We have to try to put ourselves in her place and try to think what she might be thinking. We have learned to read her way of thinking throughout the years, it hasn't been easy, but has gotten much better.

Lindsay's pastimes include watching TV, eating, playing computer games, playstation games and casino games, playing fantasy football, fantasy fishing and fantasy racing, listening to music, camping and fishing during the summer. She also enjoys remote control trucks, boats and flying bugs.

We would like to thank all the visitors to our websight. On Lindsay's 18th birthday we had our 10,000 visitor, so that was actually pretty cool, thx again.

We are very sorry for not updating our websight with the new creations.
It has been a very busy year, and our website creator has been busy as well. We hope to add alot more creations or things you can do with a disabled person by the end of 2009. The things we create or put on our website are either cheap to make, easy to do, for entertainment, or comfortability. Our daughter is very limited to what she is able to do, so some of the things we create or ideas we give are not for everybody.

We are having our 1st ANNUAL DISABLED RECREATIONS.COM  fishing tournament. It will be held Sept. 19, 2009 at Pack Memorial Park in Moundridge Ks. It will be for all ages of people that are confined to wheelchairs. We will be having flyers in businesses in the county. I will be going around to all the businesses in McPherson Co. to raise money and collect items we will be needing. Trophy's will be awarded. Depending on the amount of money raised, we will determine the amount of places and size of trophy's awarded. We are also going to put money and items aside for other events we are going to be putting on. This tournament is wheelchair dependent only, but we are planning to have other tournaments for just disabled people, wheelchair or not. There is nothing better than competition, excitement from start to finish. Win or Lose, it will be an experience you never forget, we promise. This is exactly what the Dr. ordered.

Lindsay had a GREAT 18th birthday party. We rented a cabin at a lake near here, Maxwell Game Preserve, for a couple days. She had some friends from school out. I think they had as much fun as she did. We had a cookout, along with cake and ice cream. After opening some gifts, the kids played with Lindsay's remote control truck. Nobody could quit laughing, people had to move out of the way very quick, some had to actually dance to avoid getting ran into. The truck bounced off of several of our guests vehicles, no damage was done. By the time Aaron got to play with the truck, it had just 3 wheels left on it, and the drive train had weeds wrapped around every movin part, but it was still driveable believe it or not. Hopefully Sami could walk the next day, she took one on the shin.

Then we went down to the lake and fished, also had a campfire.  Ryan, I think enjoyed pushing Lindsay's switch that reels her fishing pole in more than trying to catch fish. I think Sami was the only one that caught anything. They weren't biting a whole lot by the time we started fishing. It was just nice and fun meeting everybody and watching the kids do the things that Lindsay gets to do throughout the year. We plan on getting together more with everybody that came to Lindsay's party.

We have had a pretty good summer so far in 2009. We have caught some nice fish, Lindsay has caught the most as usual. Lindsay's dad has caught the biggest so far, a 19.7LB channel cat out at Grandpa Whites farm ponds north of Canton. Recently Lindsay caught 2 fish at one time with her electric fishing poles. We got her another electric fishing pole for her birthday, one for bass fishing, the other for channel cats or whatever is biting. She can reel one pole in at a time or both at the same time by hitting her switch. It was pretty funny when it happened. I call it cheating, she calls it master angling.

We have gone camping just twice, the weather hasn't been cooperating, it's still early. She likes to just go out to the lake and have a campfire and fish a little, but she likes listening and meeting people most of all.

She loves playing with her remote control truck. she is getting ready to finish painting her new plastic truck body, a 1980 chevy. She just loves painting actually, its very relaxing for her and seeing the finished product is the biggest thrill.

She likes flying kites as well, we go out to the ponds to do this also. There is lots of room to fly without getting caught up in trees or highline wires, but we have fished it out of the pond a few times. We get the kite up with kite string, we then tie the kite string onto her fishing line. The kite will take the line out about 200/300 yards at least, then she just hits her switch and she can reel the kite in when she is done flying. If the kite decides to start coming down on its own, she just hits the switch and gets it back up. It sure is alot easier reeling her kite in with her fishing pole, then winding the string up on the handle that comes with the kite.

She has a remote control boat also, which belonged to her big brother at one time. We haven't caught any fish with it yet, but we will, I promise you that. You can troll with a lure behind it or use it as a bobber. Just tie a hook on a string behind it with a live worm and drive it where you want and let it float like a bobber.

She also got a remote control flying bug from big brother for her birthday. We haven't mastered the controller for her to use herself yet. I hope to soon. It is actually a pretty cool little flying machine, it flies for 5/10 minutes before it needs charged again, but it doesn't take long to charge. It can just hover and move around in a small area if you want it too. It can also fly outta control, but it doesn't hurt when it hits you, very soft and light weight. You can also chase the dogs around with it, that is pretty fun.

Lindsay's big brother Quinton and dad went striper fishing June 24 at Wilson Lake. They had been a couple other times in the years past, but the weather sucked and sucked bad, along with the fishing. $1000.00 later, they caught some nice fish. It was Quinton's birthday present for 2009, so far. It was a great time.

We would like for people to use our websight to post or present their ideas or creations for handicapp or disabled people. Leave a message if you have pictures and information about your items. We can post your name with the items if you want us too. Everybody needs to work together on making life more interesting, fun, or just being comfortable for the disabled, Thx.

LINDSAY'S YEAR OF 2008!

We celebrated the new year at home with lots of good food and watching multiple t.v.'s with MTV, ABC's Dick Clark, and VH1 bringing in the new year. There is nothing better then chowing down on good food and watching your favorite music artists on the 1st day of the year, especially when you love food and music as much as Lindsay does.

We kinda had a let down in January when our Dallas Cowboys got beat in the playoff's. We were hoping to have a Superbowl party and celebrate the Cowboy's being world champion's, but they got knocked out the 1st round by the Superbowl Champion's New York Giants. Hopefully this will be our Year!

Lindsay had a great Fantasy Football and Fantasy Fishing Year. She won her NFL.com league, ESPN.com league and Yahoo.com league. She won a shirt from ESPN and a bobble head trophy from Yahoo. NFL.com doesn't give prizes, but she got to talk trash to the people that she beat in the playoff's, which is entertaining to her. Lindsay had a great year in Fantasy fishing, even though she didn't win any prizes, she finished 11th place at the end of the season. It starts in Feb. and ends in Sept. She was in 6th place going into the final tournament. ESPN.com Fantasy fishing gives out prizes to the top 7 places. The final week, she dropped from 6th place to 11th place. The reason why is her fishermen that she had in her lineup that week had a bad week of fishing. The last tournament decided Angler Of The Year and also if Lindsay would win a prize. The outcome wasn't the outcome she wanted. Kevin VanDam won the angler of the year, Todd Faircloth took 2nd. Lindsay had Faircloth in her lineup, along with 4 other fishermen. Faircloth couldn't handle the pressure and didn't finish very well, which cost Lindsay from winning a prize. Even though she didn't win a prize, I was very proud of her for finishing so high in the final standings. To finish 11th out of thousands of other participants was TOTALLY AWESOME!

We started trying to fish early this year, but it stayed cool and rained alot til June. Which made it tough fishing, because of the water temperatures and high water. We went to our neighbors pond but it was tough to get bites, unlike years past.

In June for Lindsay's birthday, we went to Eldorado lake for the Cast For Kids. It was put on by the Kansas highway patrol, it was pretty fun. Lindsay got to go out on a boat and try her luck fishing on a lake. But it rained so much leading up to this event that our luck didn't change from fishing at our neighbors pond. We lost our umbrella out of the boat and tried to catch it before it sank with Lindsay's electric fishing pole, but our bad luck fishing continued. We did happen to catch the umbrella sinking with our camcorder, so we at least caught something. It was a tough year of fishing, Lindsay still caught some fish of course, but not like she usually does.

We went camping out at Maxwell lake north of Canton, about 10 miles from our house. Lindsay had a great time. She met a couple of boys the 1st trip camping, which was pretty cool to her. The 2nd trip camping she met a bunch of kids from around Wichita that come here to camp quite often. She enjoyed the company and they enjoyed hanging around Lindsay. They also enjoyed using some of our creations that we take camping with us. I think camping has become Lindsay's favorite activity, between meeting new friends, fishing and showing off using her fishing pole, it has been very enjoying for her. We plan on doing it much more in 2009!

She had another surgery in August, everything went well, hopefully we are done with surgery's for a while.

Fantasy football started up again in Sept. and its Dec. as I type and she has made it to the playoffs in 4/5 leagues. We will let you know how she does at the end of the year.

We went to another COWBOYS game on Thanksgiving day and they won of course. We have gone to a Cowboys game the last 6 years. The last 2 years we got to see the Cowboys beat the last 2 superbowl winners. The COLTS and GIANTS, and the Manning Brothers. It wasn't as good as the last several years, but hopefully we got to see this years Superbowl winner, that would be the DALLAS COWBOYS. Lets make it 3 straight!

THIS IS OUR CREATIONS LIST: LOUNGE CHAIR WHEELCHAIR, BATHTUB LIFT with BATH CHAIR, FLYING KITE with ELECTRIC FISHING POLE, TEE BALL RETRIEVER, RC "REMOTE CONTROL" 4x4 TRUCK CONTROLLER, A MOUSE SWITCH THAT ALLOWS YOU  TO USE A SWITCH AS A MOUSE CLICK, THE WAY TO CAMP IN COMFORT. WE HAVE SEVERAL MORE ITEMS AND IDEAS, WE WILL LIST THEM SOON.

Please be patient as we are still building the website.

She actually has her own MYSPACE. Every kid needs to have their own Myspace, just because it helps her feel like she is just another 16 year old girl and she is, life is just a little tougher for her is all. She helped create it, picked out her own music, backgrounds, colors, and other cool stuff.

Lindsay's Entertainment Bedroom
Entertainment bedroom
Lindsay's room is setup with a Laptop computer with a 26” Flat screen television that has a PC (RGB) port to plug the computer into. The reason for the Flat screen (tv) is it's easier for her to see, bigger screen than her monitor, and makes game playing better for her. We have a dual mouse set up so we can help her move the mouse pointer when needed.

Swivel Clamps and Rods
Clamps and Rods
We have ½ “ x ½ “ swivel clamps and ½ “ aluminum rods with holes drilled in them that we use for a lot of different things. The swivel clamps and aluminum rods are much cheaper than buying the special clamps and tubing that are made for wheelchairs. We use (2) 1/2” x 1/2” swivel clamps and (1) 1/2” x 2' foot rod and (2) 1/2” x 1 ½' foot rods for everything.

Heat Protection
Heat Protection
The problem with fishing in the summer is the heat. Lindsay gets extra hot from the medications she is on and the fact that her body just doesn't regulate heat very well. It can cause serious problems and is something we have to be very aware of.

Homemade Electric Fishing Reel
Homemade Fishing Reel
Before we purchased the Elec-tra Mate reel, Lindsay's dad built her a homemade electric reel that we used for two or three years. It wasn't easy but between dad and brother, Quinton, we made a great creation.

Commercial Electric Fishing Reel
Electric Fishing Reel
One of Lindsay's favorite things to do is fish. We can only do this five or six months of the year but it is the best thing to do for her enjoyment. We are lucky enough to have a farm pond about a mile from our house that is full of fish. She has caught catfish, bass, bullhead, and perch. If she could fish everyday she would but mom and dad have to work for a living.

Using Pillows for Comfort
Free Ideas
We have different size pillows to make Lindsay comfortable and position her for different things such as sleeping, going to school, or playing games. Being comfortable is very important especially for kids that don't have much control of their limbs or head. Lindsay's grandma has made all sizes and shapes of pillows to suit Lindsay's needs.

Using a Camcorder as Another Set of Eyes
Camcorder
We have made it possible for Lindsay to see things up close, even though they are far away, by connecting our camcorder to her portable DVD player. This can be used for looking around when you are at the lake, vacation sightseeing, watching a ballgame, looking at your bobber when you are fishing, or any event that you have to see a long ways.

Using Umbrellas
Umbrellas
When we go fishing or are at an outside event we always have an umbrella to keep as much light out of Lindsay's face as possible. Her eyes are sensitive to light and some of the medications she is on make her prone to sunburn and heat exhaustion, possibly even heat stroke.
